The Family History

Robinson’s family history in retail spans back over 80 years in the Ballymena area with Harry and Margaret Robinson trading from a corner shop on Albert Place as far back as the early 1930s. By trade Harry was originally a sewing machine mechanic and Margaret like many of her generation worked in the old Linen Mill. The shop on Albert Place served the town folk for over a generation and was situated where the Portfolio Gallery is nowadays, next to the Tower Centre car park

Harry & Margaret’s eldest son Cecil initially served his time in Dickie & Pinkertons as a motor mechanic in premises on the Galgorm Road in the days long before the North Road junction and time served he eventually went on to run a nearby Waveney Laundry fleet. A reluctant mechanic Cecil emigrated with his own family to California in 1962 but returned home after 6 months to Ballymena having been given the opportunity to run a petrol station for BP on the corner of William St and Broughshane St. Back on home soil Cecil expanded into car accessories and by the 1970′s owned five successful “Drive Rite” accessory shops in Ballymena, Portadown, Carrickfergus and Larne. He also took charge of another Petrol station in Ballymoney

Cecil made the decision to retire early in the 1980s due to his wife Nelly suffering from ill health. In turn Cecil’s eldest son Finlay negotiated with another local Ballymena businessman, Jimmy Thompson and for a few years rented a petrol station site from him on the Doury Road. Then in 1985 an opportunity came up for Finlay to buy the current site on the Cullybackey Road from Austin McGillian as he relocated his growing business, Ace Fixings to the Woodside Road in Broughshane

There have been 3 major on site redevelopments since 1985, the first being a small convenience shop with forecourt amenities. This eventually expanded to a 2000sq ft. shop in the mid-1990s and with the introduction of the Costcutter symbol group into Northern Ireland Robinsons became one of the first stores under the Costcutter banner; now very much a household name throughout the UK

The next level involved the purchase of adjoining premises, John Kenny’s former Accident Repair Centre and by January 2006 we opened our doors to the public in our current format, the 6000sq ft. supermarket that you know today. We pride ourselves in offering a more comprehensive package than ever before with respect to the family history. One of the country’s top hot and cold deli counters, off sales, express and grocery shopping, and topped off with a business partnership with K&G McAtamney, one of Northern Ireland’s premier award winning butchers

The current store is owned by brother’s Finlay and Kenneth Robinson who modestly put their success down to their managers, staff and loyal customer base. The added advantage of being part of the Costcutter group allows Robinsons to offer competitive pricing and value, whilst in turn offering customers a pleasant and rewarding shopping experience. We look forward to your next visit
